Torque is force × lever arm. Converting both parts: 1 N = 0.2248089431 lbf and 1 m = 3.280840 ft, so 1 N·m = 0.2248089 × 3.280840 = 0.7375621 ft·lb.
Because both underlying factors are exact definitions, the torque factor is exact too — the only rounding is what you choose to display.
Common automotive torques converted
Spark plugs: 25 N·m ≈ 18.4 ft·lb. Oil drain plug: 35 N·m ≈ 25.8 ft·lb. Lug nuts: 110–140 N·m ≈ 81–103 ft·lb. Cylinder-head bolts: often 60 N·m plus angle — convert the base figure (44.3 ft·lb) and apply the same angle.
